Human Trafficking Discussion In Warren County Thursday

Warren County is continuing the conversation about human trafficking with a community discussion on Thursday, Aug. 8. The county said the conversation began in January with 200 community members and is now looking to discuss how to address it locally. WTEN reports the conversation will be held at 10 a.m. at the Queensbury Hotel’s Adirondack Ballroom at 88 Ridge St. in Glens Falls.

SNAP Recipients Can Be Reimbursed For Food Lost To Severe Weather

SNAP recipient households that have lost food purchased with SNAP benefits due to the severe storm are entitled to a replacement issuance of SNAP benefit. You need to report the loss by August 13, 2024, and return a signed and completed form LDSS-2291 (attached) “Request for Replacement of Food Purchased with Food Stamp Benefits,” within 10 days of the date of the report of loss. The form can be mailed or faxed to Warren County Department of Social Services at 518-761-6301.

Six Flags Great Escape To Host Workforce Celebration

Six Flags Great Escape and Hurricane Harbor is again hosting its Workforce Celebration honoring tourism industry workers. Six Flags and partners will open the doors for a night of fun at the end of summer, Monday, September 9, for all tourism and hospitality workers. Registration information will be forthcoming.

Corrections Commissioner Says Great Meadow Closure Is Final

New York State Commissioner of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Daniel Martuscello says the decision to close the Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Washington County is final. He told WRGB the 54 million dollars in prison upgrades need to be done to prepare Great Meadow for any possible reuse after it’s closed, but he couldn’t say what that reuse might be.

Camping And Day Use Sites Reopened In Lake George Islands

DEC has reopened all camping and day-use sites in the Narrow Island group of Lake George Islands. The sites reopened almost three weeks after a storm caused damage to the area. The agency first announced many camping and day-use sites would be closed until further notice on July 17, after storms left considerable damage. On July 24, nine of the campsites reopened on Hatchet and Floating Battery Islands.

Herbicide Reportedly Did Its Job In Lake George

A controversial herbicide put in the Lake George water eliminated an invasive species, according to Warren County environmentalists. WTEN reports the chemical ProcellaCor killed water milfoil. The conservation district said video shows the milfoil plants brown and deteriorating and the native plants thriving. The chemical was applied back in June, after pushback and a lawsuit from the public opposing its use.

Workshop Meeting On Possible Boost To County Sales Tax

The Warren County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a workshop meeting on Wednesday, August 14 to discuss a proposal to increase the county sales tax rate. The board will discuss a proposal to raise the rate a maximum of 1% as a mechanism to potentially lower the property tax burden and put more of the cost burden on visitors to the county to increase funding for infrastructure repairs and improvements. The Board of Supervisors workshop meeting will be held at Warren County Municipal Center, 1340 Route 9, Queensbury, starting at 10 a.m. that day.

Glens Falls Man Facing Child Porn Counts

State Police announced the arrest of a Glens Falls man for allegedly having and promoting child sex abuse images. 32 year old Jason Barnes is charged with promoting and possessing a sexual performance by a child. WTEN reports State Police arrested Barnes on Friday after receiving a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Grumbellies In Fort Ann Closed

Husband and wife duo Jeff and Irma Hamblin opened up Grumbellies at 64 Catherine Street in Fort Ann in June 2016. After eight years at that location, the eatery closed its doors on July 27. WTEN reports they were forced out of the space on Catherine Street. The person who owned the building, died, and while the Hamblins were making an offer to buy the building, another offer was accepted.

No Charges To Be Filed In Lake George Stabbing

The investigation continues into last week’s stabbing in Lake George Village that left one person dead and two injured. WRGB reports the call came in late on the night of August 1st. 57-year-old John W. Kopel of Chestertown and 18-year-old Noah A. Hare allegedly assaulted 33-year-old Jeramee R. Tucker of Glens Falls with dangerous instruments. Kopel died of injuries sustained in the incident. Police say charges will not be filed against Tucker as it was determined he was defending himself from an attack.
