The Wild Center was recently nominated as “Best Science Museum” in USA TODAY’s 2023 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
According to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, those interested in supporting The Wild Center’s nomination can vote online now until Feb. 13th and then winners will be chosen by a panel of travel experts.

Mentorship Program For At Risk Youth And Young Adults

A new public-private partnership is helping to prepare at-risk youth and young adults for success in the workforce.
The Warren County Career Mentoring Program pilot project has been in place since last fall to help young people gain job skills and experience. Sun Community News reports youth ages 14 and up who are selected take part in an eight-week after-school program that places them with businesses that have agreed to have their staff serve as mentors.

Two Elements Of Ice Castles Open For Sneak Peek This Weekend

We told you about the delayed opening of Ice Castles Lake George until Feb. 3 — but the public will have an opportunity this next weekend to experience one aspect of the frozen attraction now under construction. Sun Community News reports the “Mystic Light Walk” and “Polar Pub” — both new this year — will be open for a special public preview Friday, Jan. 27, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 28, from 4 p.m. at no charge.

Man Sentnenced For Sexually Assaulting Teen In Lake Luzerne

A Gloversville man was sentenced on Wednesday to 2 years in prison for sexually assaulting a teenager. According to the Post Star, 41 year old Albert Pelkey was arrested on May 2 after police received a report of a sexual assault. The incident occurred in a remote wooded location in the town of Lake Luzerne involving a teen Pelkey reportedly met on social media.

Change Of Time For Two Big Lake George Events

Two of the village of Lake George’s longtime special events have scheduled new dates this year. According to the Post Star, organizers of the annual Americade motorcycle rally have decided to move the event to May 31-June 3, the week after Memorial Day. Also, The Eastern States Towing and Recovery Show, or ESTRA, will move to Americade’s former week of June 9-11. Both events had been scheduled for the same week this year.

GGFT Could Merge With CDTA

The Greater Glens Falls Transit (GGFT) and the city are in talks to merge GGFT with the Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA), which operates public transit around Albany, Schenectady, and currently as far north as Saratoga. Proponents say the merge would help the currently city-run system to thrive, while streamlining the resources that CDTA already shares.

Johnsburg And Minerva School Districts Consider Merging

Johnsburg and Minerva school districts are thinking about merging. The Post-Star reports the Boards of Education from both schools will hold a joint meeting on January 31 to hear from state education officials on conducting the study.
The Johnsburg district has a student population of about 300 students and Minerva about 120 students.

Whitehall Woman Busted For Drugs Following Traffic Stop

State Police of Wilton recently arrested Shannon A. Welch of Whitehall, N.Y. on two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia. Troopers stopped a vehicle on Butler Road in Moreau and the driver, identified as Welch, 38, had an active warrant for her arrest. When taken into custody, Welch possessed felony-weight narcotics and a digital scale.

Bike Lanes Plan Unveiled In Glens Falls

Citizen action group Bike Glens Falls visited a recent meeting of the Glens Falls Common Council, in order to present to the city a case for adding bike lanes to two sections of downtown street. According to WTEN, the group has identified parts of Bay and Ridge Streets, under a mile each, that they say would be ripe for bike lanes.
