75 year old Wally Hirsch, the longtime owner of Binley Florist in Queensbury, is retiring. According to WTEN, Hirsh said that he’s leaving Binley Florist in good hands; Tami Field, the store’s general manager and a 23-year employee, took over on Tuesday with her husband, David. There are no current plans to move from the current location or to replace any of the staff.

Fort Edward Police Department Dissolution Update
The village of Fort Edward is now in the process of dissolving the police department. According to the Post Star, the resolution was discussed at a public hearing on Monday night, and village residents have the next 30 days to petition the board’s decision, and establish a public vote. If they don’t, the police department will break up by early March and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office will provide coverage for 20 hours a day.
Whitehall Man Charged With Abusing A Minor
A Whitehall man in his 70’s faces sex assault charges – after being accused of abusing a minor, back in the fall. Accoording to WNYT, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department says 73-year-old Miles Stevens assaulted someone under the age of 15, back on October 5th in the town of Poultney. Stevens is expected to appear in Vermont Superior Court next month.
Grant To Make Region’s Roadways Safer
The region’s planning and economic development organization, the Lake Champlain Lake George Regional Planning Board (LCLGRPB), has been awarded $320,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation, with additional funding from NYSDOT Regions 1,2, and 7, to create plans with the goal of making our region’s roadways safer for all users. Sun Community News reports with this funding, the LCLGRPB will create two Comprehensive Action Plans, one for Warren and Washington Counties and the Town of Moreau, and the other for Clinton, Essex, and Hamilton counties.
Queensbury Man Jailed On Drug Counts After Traffic Stop
A Queensbury man is in jail without bail, accused of possessing a large quantity of cocaine and crack cocaine. WRGB reports late Saturday night, authoriites pulled over 47 year old Peter Morales at the intersection of Shippey Street and Garfield Street in the City of Glens Falls after witnessing a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. Upon investigation it was found that Morales was in possession of a large quantity of cocaine and crack cocaine.
WCSO Warns Of Phone Scams
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is warning people they’ve received two reports about phone scams in the past week. WTEN reports one incident involved someone texting a resident, claiming to be from the Hudson Headwaters Health Network and seeking payment. The text message included a faulty link, saying “the balance of your recent appointment with Hudson Headquarters is ready to view and pay.”
Warren County Treasurer Seeks STR Property Owners to Register
The Warren County Treasurer’s Office is urging owners of properties in Warren County used for short-term rental to register with the county Treasurer’s Office or risk court action for failing to comply with Warren County Occupancy Tax Law. Nearly 1,000 rental properties have been registered, but the Treasurer’s Office is aware of approximately 175 properties whose owners have not come forward
Empire State Winter Games Underway
The 43rd Empire State Winter Games (ESWG) Torch Relay wrapped up its five-day epic journey in Lake Placid Thursday, Feb. 2. The games themselves commenced last night at 6 p.m. with an opening ceremony. The competitions begin Friday and run through Sunday. The ESWG is the largest multi-sport amateur winter sporting event in North America. This year it is expected to draw around 2,000 athletes competing in more than 20 events in Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Paul Smiths and surrounding areas.
Upgrade For Veterans Park in Bolton Landing
A major initiative to upgrade Veterans Park in Bolton Landing with new features moved forward recently with Gov. Kathy Hochl’s announcement of a second state grant of $1.725 million toward the project. Sun Community News reports the grant is to bankroll about three-quarters of the $2.3 million cost of constructing a new recreation center at the park to host educational and recreational programs year-round. This monetary award was preceded by a $975,000 grant pledged in 2021 towards other upgrades of the park.
2023 Lake George Winter Carnival Kicks Off This Weekend
The 2023 Lake George Winter Carnival kicks off this weekend. Sun Community News reports planned for this weekend are several of the Winter Carnival’s signature events: the annual outhouse races set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 in Battlefield Park, as well as the keg-toss contest and the skillet-throwing competition, set for 4 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5 respectively on Shepard Park Beach.
